The subfloor is the plywood, OSB, or concrete base that supports the finished floor, and the prep work on that base is what helps your new floor sit flat, feel solid, and last.
What does subfloor prep include?
Subfloor prep can mean sweeping and vacuuming, removing staples, scraping old adhesive, tightening loose panels, flattening high spots, filling low spots, and checking moisture. It is not glamorous, but it is part of a proper install, not an optional add-on if the floor needs it.
Why does a flat subfloor matter for LVP?
Luxury vinyl plank locks together along small edges. If the floor underneath has dips or humps, those joints can flex, click, separate, or wear faster. In kitchens, basements, and rentals around Atlantic County, we would rather spend time flattening the base than leave you with a floor that sounds hollow in six months.
What about carpet and engineered hardwood?
Carpet forgives small imperfections better than hard surface flooring, but soft spots, squeaks, and old tack strip still need attention. Engineered hardwood needs an even cleaner starting point because the boards show movement and unevenness quickly. Good prep helps both floors feel sturdy underfoot instead of bouncy or uneven.
